Tenor Elias Wilson is a Birrpay man and a performer of opera, chamber music and oratorio.

Since 2021 Elias has appeared on the opera stage with Pacific Opera (Nemorino in Donizetti’s L’elisir d’amore, directed by Peter Coleman-Wright AO), NIDA (Lysander in Britten’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, directed by Kate Gaul) and Pinchgut Opera (Chorus in Cavalli’s The Loves of Apollo & Dafne, directed by Mitchell Butel). His previous credits include La Rainette in Ravel’s L’Enfant et les Sortileges (Sydney Conservatorium), Satyavān in Gustav Holst’s Sāvitri (The Cooperative), and in full drag as Madame de la Haltière in Massenet’s Cendrillon (Sydney Conservatorium). Elias has also performed in the choruses of Verdi’s La Traviata, and Carlisle Floyd’s Susannah, directed by George Torbay for Opera New England.

In 2023, Elias made his Cover and Principal Artist debuts with Victorian Opera, covering Beadle and Pirelli in Sondheim’s Sweeney Todd, and creating the role of Gary in Christopher Sainsbury’s operatic adaptation of Jane Harrison’s The Visitors.

Elias holds a Master of Music Studies (Opera Performance) and a Bachelor of Music Studies (Classical Voice) from the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. During his studies Elias was supported by the Donald Lionel Egerton Scholarship, and the Helpmann Family Fellowship. While studying, a Vice Chancellor’s Mobility Scholarship enabled Elias to travel to Hangzhou, China, where he performed excerpts by Puccini and Bernstein in recital. Following his graduation, Elias was awarded the 2022 Harold Blair Opera Scholarship for indigenous opera singers by Melba Opera Trust.

In-demand as chamber and oratorio performer, Elias performs regularly with the Australian Brandenburg Orchestra, was an associate and ensemble artist with The Song Company from 2018-2022, and in 2022 hetravelled to Darwin to perform the tenor solo in Handel’s Messiah with conductor Brett Weymark OAM. Elias appears regularly with the choirs of St James King Street and St Paul’s College, and has recorded for ABC Classic under the direction of Tamara-Anna Cislowska as part of Luminescence Chamber Singers. Elias has performed as a chamber singer in Brisbane, Armidale, Sydney, Bathurst, Canberra and Melbourne under the batons of Sam Allchurch, Carl Crossin OAM, Paul Dyer AO, Erin Helyard, Neil McEwan AM, Roland Peelman AM, Antony Pitts, and Paul Stanhope. In March 2023 Elias added the role of the Evangelist in Bach’s St John Passion to his repertoire, with performances in Armidale and Guyra NSW.
